OLYMPUS GARAGE DOOR AND GATE REPAIR

Review

I tried to locate a YELP or GOOGLE review of this company, but was unsuccessful.  So, I opted to create an online review of my own with the hope it will be useful for others in search of a company to perform garage door services.  The opinions expressed here are my own, and are based upon my experience with the Santa Clarita branch of OLYMPUS.  I am writing this to provide as comprehensive and accurate recap of my experience with this company as possible with the objective of providing future customers of Olympus with the benefit of my knowledge and experience.  Anyone making a decision on what company or contractor to hire for a garage door repair or replacement should do their own supplemental research and form their own opinion.  My experience was solely limited to a malfunctioning garage door.  I have NOTHING to provide in the way of experience concerning gate services.

By the way - this company appears to operate under other names as evidenced by the high similarity in design and wording of the websites..  A customer of one such apparent company - HEXAGON GARAGE DOOR REPAIR - in Norwalk called me in July 2023 to tell me his story of woe.  Unfortunately, he did not read my review before contacting HEXAGON and was royally ripped off for his pair of garage door springs!!!   There are likely other company names this outfit is using - perhaps to avoid losing business because of a negative review of one of their names.   Just be careful.

My one and only experience with this company was in January 2023 when I needed service to our garage door.  They have a website (in fact, it appears there are a number of "Olympus Garage Door" websites search with a specific city identified).  I believe it was set up that way so that a potential customer searching for garage door service in a particular city would find an Olympus ad related to that city.

I live in Santa Clarita, CA - the link that came up when I was searching for a company was the following:

https://olympusgaragedoorrepair.com/santa-clarita.php?campaignid=11853341473&adgroupid=142014815209&creative=611933575903&matchtype=e&network=g&device=c&keyword=garage%20door%20repair%20santa%20clarita&kw=garage%20door%20repair%20santa%20clarita&cpn=11853341473&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxqzN08Ly_AIVhSutBh3OMA9VEAAYASAAEgLMzvD_BwE

The ad was well-written and it appeared from its content to be a solid company.  I called the number on the ad - (661) 379-6834.  A gentleman answered the phone, and he seemed professional.  As I think back, it almost sounded (from the background) to be a call center.  I explained my issue (garage door quit working), and he said that he would have someone out that afternoon between 1 and 3 PM.  So far, I was impressed.

Right on schedule (another plus), Daniel from their company arrived.  It was not a company truck, but it did have lots of equipment.  Daniel was very personable and knowledgeable.  He explained that our garage door springs were weak (showed me how the door slammed to the driveway when he disconnected it from the opener).  It was apparent I needed replacement springs. I had a choice of the "China" brand at around $450+ each, or a much higher quality (rated for many more cycles) USA (made in Los Angeles) for just over $600 a piece.  I have never bought springs before, but I thought that was excessively high.  But we were in trouble.  I did not want my expensive car left on the street, so I opted for the better USA springs.

I had also asked about a new garage door opener as mine was not functioning.  He recommended a Lift Master which is a very good brand - but the cost would be $3,750 installed.  In hindsight, that should have set off an alarm that the springs really were likely excessively priced.  I said no on the opener and said to go ahead with the springs as I did not want to try and find another company.  That was my mistake and I take responsibility for that.

I watched while Daniel replaced our springs.  I admit I was very impressed with Daniel - he was truly a professional, talented,  and was very personable.  He explained how the springs worked, how they determine the proper tension, and the reason why the USA springs were better.   I felt confident that I had found our garage door company (and would recommend them) for our future needs.

He did the replacement job in about 20 minutes - give or take a few.  That turned out to be a $350 labor charge (which I did not understand in the beginning, but in fairness, he could have mentioned it and I was not paying attention).  If I had really heard that number, I would have looked elsewhere.  The first time I recall seeing that figure is when he presented the invoice.

The total job for two springs was $1,710.

After the new springs were installed, the door worked easily going up and down manually.  As I said, a very good installation and the springs worked well.

He then gave me an alternative for another model of the Lift Master that would be $1,208 installed with the optional outside wireless key.  That seemed more reasonable and I gave him to go-ahead for that. Her did not have that motor with him, but they had it at the shop.  Either he or another tech would come back this evening and do the install.  He presented the invoice which I signed and gave him a credit card for the full amount - $2,918.

I feel sick to my stomach just writing that figure.  Oh well....live and learn.  As I mentioned, as he left, he reminded me that a tech would come between 7-9 to install the new opener.

As promised, at 7 PM, a different tech (a nice young man, very skilled) arrived and installed the new opener.  He helped me with the WIFI connection to the app on my iphone, adjusted the fall and rise of the door, and set up the outside keypad.  He was very neat and tidy.  He left about 8:30 PM.  It was in my opinion a job well done.

I want to make it clear - both Daniel and his associate (whose name I do not recall) were very professional and talented.  The work appears to have been done very well.   From a service perspective, they are deserving of 5 stars.  They were prompt, courteous, and professional.

However, and this is other side of the equation:   the price I paid - after doing research later in the evening - seems outrageous for the springs.  After looking at about 100 different spring ads, they ran from about $50 a pair to the most expensive I could fine - which were also USA made springs for $465 a pair.  I paid over $1360 just for the springs!  Then, most company labor charges seemed to be around $150 - $200 max.  $350 - which is what I paid - was excessive.  Attorneys charge typically $350 an hour and some more.  For the 20 minutes (I will even go as long as 30 minutes), the charge was equivalent to $700 an hour.  That is in the area of a neuro brain surgeon!!  This was challenging, but not in the same rhelm of service.

The mysterious aspect of all of this is the following.  The receipt (invoice) I was given showed LOCAL GARAGE DOOR AND GATES as the company name.  There was NO ADDRESS anywhere on the form.  The phone number - (818) 915-7628 - does not link to any company (I did a Google search on it).   I Googled the number and it was not linked to any company!  There were references to some foreign-sounding names. Strange.

The number on the ad (as seen in the link above) ties to another company - LOCAL GARAGE DOOR AND GATE (no "S" on gates......).  That father-son company in Santa Clarita has a 5-star review, but as far as I can see, absolutely no relationship to OLYMPUS.  Why the phone number on the Olympus Santa Clarita website brings up this other LOCAL GARAGE AND GATE company is a bit of a mystery.

Bottom line - and the reason why I opted to take the time and trouble to create this website - is to alert prospective customers to really do their homework.  In hindsight, I am upset with myself for being taken for what appears to be a ride and paying excessively for my garage door springs and opener.  I am not as upset with the opener issue - but how I was tricked (as I believe I was) into paying so much for the springs kept me awake all night.  I don't want anyone else to feel that way.

Maybe the springs should have been $600 for both.  The fact that I was given an extended warranty for 5 years would be worth the difference between the highest price I saw on the web and $600 or so (for the pair).

Oh, one other thing.  Daniel said that their company gives a warranty on the Lift Master for 5 years (parts and labor), and Lift Master warrants the motor for 15 years.  After it was installed and I read the owner's manual, it said it was a 4 year warranty.  Unfortunately, Daniel's claimed manufacturer's warranty of 10 years was not in writing, so I cannot really do anything about that.  Just be careful about alleged manufacturer's warranty for a long term - get that in writing!!

If I could rate the company on Yelp, they would have a "2" or maybe a "1."   Service and professionalism is clearly a "5."  Their outrageous pricing earns them a "1" - primarily for the springs.

A message to LOCAL GARAGE DOOR AND GATE

I wish I would have called you.  I read your reviews closely last night - they are a tribute to your business (a father-son operation).  There were a couple of crazy (and negative) reviews posted for which you (Shawn) replied that you did not know the individual or recognize the job.  I suggest that it may have been someone who mistook LOCAL GARAGE DOOR AND GATES (with an "S") for your company.  Just a thought.

Thanks for reading - and I hope this posting helps prospective customers seeking garage door repair to make a good decision.
